My dear Don,
Thank you for your letter. I hope your father has continued to improve and perhaps able to come home again.
Yes, as you say it has been a pity that the family seems to have lost contact with each other.
You mentioned your Uncle Bill. For some years I had a card and a nice letter from him until this last Christmas when nothing came, so I am wondering if something has happened to him.
I think that both Jack & Lily Shepherd have passed on. I have not heard anything of them for years. There was a brother Art Nicklen. They were the son and daughter of my Dad's sister who was your Grandmother's sister at Bournemouth.
If you can ever get down this way, we should be pleased to welcome you. We are about 3½ miles from Romsey, and 11 from Southampton.
My two sons live quite close to me. I am not enjoying this weather very much. It has been a very wet day today.
Now I must close with kind remembrances to your Dad.
Yours sincerely,
Cousin Minnie Hutchens

Dear Don,
Thank you for your letter, we got the message through your Xmas card, thanks again.
Sorry to hear Uncle Mat is ill, it was kind of you to write to us and let us know about him. We have exchanged Xmas Greetings and the odd letter or so over the years and Father always referred to him as Young Mat.
Uncle Bill died a few weeks ago, he was a wonderful old fellow, he got around until quite recently. I often saw him with his wheelbarrow pondering how best to get it on to the pavement. I never interfered with him, he became so forgetful and I thought it best not to confuse him, he always managed. Perhaps you have heard from his family by this time.
I will write to Uncle Mat, thank you once again for letting us know about him. Perhaps we could meet some time? I am by the way, cousin Cicely, Cis for short.
Sincerely yours,
C. Cowley (Mrs.)

Dear Don,
Thank you for telling me about your father.
I quite missed his usual card at Christmas with his lovely writing.
I feel that I should explain to you who I am. My Dad & your Grandmother Tate were brother and sister, and in my young days, I spent quite a lot of time with the family in Eastleigh. I have not seen your father for many years, but we always exchanged Christmas greetings.
Do you think he is well enough to receive a letter? If so I would send him a line.
I am not enjoying the cold weather very much.
Will now close & remain,
Your cousin Minnie

Dear Don,
Thank you for sending me a Memorial Card. I wonder how you are getting on about the family tree.
I expect you knew all about your Dad's brothers and sister. Of course I knew them all very well and often stayed with them in Eastleigh (Many years ago). I am afraid I did not know anything about your Dad's grandfather, but his father's name was Henry.
The William Tate I mentioned was one of your Dad's brothers and up till last Christmas I used to hear from him, but last year I did not, so I have wondered if he has passed away. I have not heard from any of the others for some years. It is such a pity that families seem to drift apart. I only had one brother and he died some time ago with cancer and we have recently lost his widow. They only had one son & he died a few years ago, so you see how time passes on.
I hope all your family have kept well. We have had a nice summer.
I will close now. Cheerio.

Dear Vera & Don,
Just a hurried note to tell you Fred is in hospital again.
He had another attack on Sunday evening, quite out of the blue. We have only been back from a very restful holiday a week. The doctor said there is not any reasons why the attacks occur. He is still on the Cardiorator machine (I think I have the name right) but hope they will unfix it today. He is strapped in the one position and of course gets most uncomfortable. He was quite bad on Monday but is improving slowly thank goodness. He looked and felt a lot better when I saw him last night.
His address if you want to write is

I will write again later to let you know his progress.
Best Wishes

Dear Don,
You will be surprised to receive this letter & probably know nothing of me! I am the elder daughter of your Uncle Henry Tate & sister of Gladys, who has given me your address. I think you had a brother too!
I regret to tell you my Father passed away 24th Nov in a private Nursing Home. I telephoned Gladys asking her to let his relatives know, as I had no addresses. For private reasons she was unable to do this & I was sorry as so few people came to funeral. He was cremated as he wished after a very beautiful Church service at St. Peters. At the great age of 94½ years, his friends had pre-deceased him, apart from Freemasons of his Lodge who came & sent a beautiful wreath, as they had visited him fairly recently.
He came to Dorset over two years ago, as his stepdaughter could no longer keep him with her. He needed constant attention for some time & had cancer of the tongue but no pain & old age & sclerosis.
Would you kindly inform any relatives he may have living for me please? His end was very peaceful.
I am sorry to hear you lost your Father - whom I had not seen since a very young infant. It would have been too far for you to travel in any case probably.
During my Father's second marriage I saw little of him, but he turned to me after he became a widower again.
I am a widow too having lost my husband with cancer a year ago last April - a major operation a year previously.
It seems wrong any family members not knowing. I hope you will understand.
Yours sincerely
Hilda M. Linington

Dear Vera & Don,
Thank you for the Greeting card, I was pleased to hear from you, also to know Babs had written to you, she has been most helpful in so many ways.
I now feel I should have sent you a line before, life is a terrible rush here most days, we have 36 old people.
Yes it's sad Dad is no longer with us, seems impossible after all these years, he was 94 years, wonderful too, he did not suffer, one big blessing. We have been worried and worried for several years over cancer in his mouth, spread to his tongue and would have reached his throat in time after several years of treatment he had too.
Babs' husband died in the same Nursing Home at Bournemouth of the same complaint not two years ago yet.
I did think of you but felt sure you couldn't have reached Bournemouth. Rosemary and I had a good train journey down, but were 5 hours getting home then got a taxi. Lovely service as he would have wished.
Rosemary passed The City & Guild, London Institute Exam with credit into 4th year at College now.
Hope you are all well.
My wishes & love
